Long Beach Airport Shut Down Due Suspicious Package

By | September 11, 2006

A suspicious package was found around 8:30AM local time Monday morning inside a rental lot across from the terminal at Long Beach Airport. The investigate shut down the terminal until members of the LA County Sheriff’s department Bomb Squad detonated the package, described as a carrying case, about two hours later.

About eight departures were held, although flight arrivals were not delayed. One inbound passenger, according to KTVU, commented quite intelligently that it appeared officials had overreacted a bit, but if something had happened, everyone would question why they hadn’t done anything.

That particular thought it what we believe emphasizes the current security environment. How do we balance rationality with fearing every unclaimed piece of property or unknown item may be a weapon of destruction? We await your comments.
