Delta Looks to Simplify Tow and Tug Processes on Taxiways

By | March 31, 2007

Delta has entered into an agreement with Wheeltug plc to assist in developing a new system that might enable pilots to back away from gates with a tow tug, and to taxi without using jet engines. This would reduce fuel consumption on the ground, and may reduce airline ground congestion by assisting in airplane mobility.

The WheelTug system includes powerful electric motors in the airplane’s nose wheel that will enable pilots to back away from gates without a tow tug and then taxi to their takeoff, or a remote start point before starting the airplane’s engines. After landing, the pilot can turn off the jet engines and use the system to drive the airplane to its gate.

By helping with development, Delta could be the launch customer for this new system, and could be equipping its 737NGs with it as early as late 2009.  It also gives Delta the right to provide installation and maintenance services for itelf and other airlines that want Wheeltug services, which could mean significant revenue for the airline.
