Staying Hydrated

By | September 4, 2008

In light of the news that US Airways would not longer provide even water on aircraft to passengers, we have been looking for ways to get around this. You can’t bring water from home because you are limited to 3oz or less of liquid.

We began to think about some of the travel gear we’d seen over the years and went to visit the local sporting goods store in search of hydration equipment. We found some products by a company called Platypus that seem fairly good for what we had in mind.

For those more environmentally-concerned, their items are BPA-free, made with a multi-layer laminate of urethane and food-grade, taste-free polyethylene film. There are a variety of accessories that are available, such as tubes for hiking, and holsters for the large reservoirs. We’ve already been told it looks a bit like an IV bag.

They offer a collapsible bottle that can be rolled up and fit into the pocket of your bag, filled after you pass through security, then brought on board. It comes in half-liter, liter, and two-liter bottles. For the whole family, they offer two, four, or six liter water tanks. We’d love to see the expression of a flight attendant on a US Airways flight…”Hey, we brought water for everyone…” Just make sure you bring cups.

We checked out the reviews of this item on Amazon, which offers it with its Free Super Saver Shipping. You can find it here. There are several good things to be said, and some limiters, but for what we suggest, it looks good. Happy drinking.
