Southwest announced today it would add Saturday only service from New York-LaGuardia Airport to Denver International Airport. The rest of the week the service will be offered on a one-stop basis.
Saturday-only service is the only option as Southwest is not securing any additional slots at LaGuardia, but Saturday service is not slot or perimeter regulated. Airlines have tried Saturday only service out of LaGuardia – but most have not succeeded. The sorts of destinations that work on a weekly basis are usually leisure ones. We can’t see Southwest capturing a significant amount of market share on the Denver-New York route with this.
We’d love to see Southwest experiment with Saturday at LaGuardia a bit more though, perhaps in a more successful leisure market. A weekly nonstop to Vegas, perhaps, where they have not only a leisure destination, but great hub connections. Not sure what would be sustainable, honestly, as no one in recent memory done consistently well with Saturday only service out of LaGuardia to places like LAX.
