Reports are coming in that an American Airlines plane overshot the runway, crashed, and broke in two. Flight 331 was landing in pouring rain at its final destination of Norman Manley Airport in Kingston, Jamaica. We will update this post as we receive additional information.
The plane was carrying 148 passengers and 6 crewmembers. Initial word by Omar Lawrence, operations coordinator, Kingston Intl. Airport. Reports indicate all persons onboard have exited the aircraft. Forty persons have been taken to the hospital with broken bones and/or head injuries. No fatalities have been reported as yet.
The plane, Flight 331, operated by a 737-800, had originated in Washington-National Airport, and continued on to Miami, and was delayed for over an hour before leaving for Kingston. American Airlines operates 107 737-800s with an average age of six years.
