Delta announced on Monday they would be inaugurating service from Boston’s Logan Airport and Chicago-Midway effective January 11, 2007. The service, operated by Comair, will offer three flights on weekdays and two on weekends using 50-seater regional jets.
Chicago-Midway Airport is where the majority of the low-cost carriers operate their service. Airtran already operates Boston to Midway service. Airtran is Delta’s biggest low cost competitor out of Atlanta, their biggest hub. Of course, the comparison between 50-seater planes three times daily to Boeing 717 100 seater aircraft three times daily usually leads people to opt for the larger aircraft unless they are connecting on the same carrier to a second location.
If this is successful, Delta will likely sustain this route on the power of their brand recognition and customer loyalty alone.
