In an inspiring note, an airline has actually reduced its fuel surcharge for all US flights. Usually, even though airlines raise their surcharges as fuel prices rise, they don’t give passengers the courtesy of reversing that when prices lower.
El Al Israel Airlines announced it is lowering its prices due to a decrease in the price of oil.
“EL AL is pleased to pass along savings to our customers due to a drop in fuel prices. These low fares allow our passengers to enjoy an affordable visit to see family and friends, be a tourist, or simply relax in Israel after the holiday season.” said Michael Mayer, CEO, North & Central America, EL AL Israel Airlines.

El Al’s pricing aside, we hope other airlines follow it making their fuel surcharges actually related to the price of fuel. If an airline has to raise fares, let them raise fares. We will not be happy, but we understand they do it because they feel it is a business necessity. Putting on a fuel surcharge is just an excuse to claim it isn’t a fare increase, it is keyed to fuel prices. If it never lowers, then it cannot be related. It is just a loophole.
