The Coalition for Luggage Security issued a press release today, commenting on RFID baggage tagging. The Coalition believes luggage should be treated as cargo and that it should not be shipped on passenger flights. They fail to truly comment though on RFID though.
RFID, as we’ve mentioned in the past, has great potential for improved luggage handling. Suddenly, finding one specific bag out of hundreds is easier. Baggage sorting also becomes more efficient. Now, this hardly makes up for the large problems in luggage shipment. We’ve wondered how it is UPS, Fedex, and the like have such a lower rate of failure in transporting items than the airlines. On the other hand, it is a different environment.
Personally, we are travelling on the plane…and we don’t see why our luggage should not come with us as long as we aren’t taking our entire life with us. To suggest that is unreasonable or unsafe is ridiculous. We would be interested to see how many people, given the chance, and with the involvement of the airlines, would opt to ship their luggage ahead.
We invite you to read what the Coalition has to say. They are not even trying to hide their agenda in a carefully skewed discussion of the supposed topic.
