Lots to cover…never enough time…

  • United Airlines announced new service from Los Angeles to Des Moines, IA and Austin, TX effective February 13th, and will be operated by Skywest’s CRJ-700 regional jets with 6 first class and 60 economy seats, including Economy Plus.
  • Beginning on March 3rd, Delta will be offering flights from Lawton/Ft. Sill, Oklaholma to Atlanta, with service 50-seat CRJ200 regional jets operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines.
  • Virgin America launched twice daily service between Washington Dulles and LAX yesterday. Virgin America also serves its San Francisco hub from the airport.
  • L’Avion, the all business-class French airline, will add Saturday flights between Newark and Paris’s Orly airport on December 22nd, bringing the service to daily.
  • FlyGlobeSpan, the Scottish discount carrier, has been barred from flying directly across the Atlantic. They have suspended their ETOPS authority, which permits twin engine aircraft to fly on routes in excess of one hour from a diversionary airport. Without it, they must fly a longer route, which means a longer flight time and possiblle refueling stops. Some of the carrier’s routes, subcontracted to other carriers, are not affected.
  • Air Canada will be adding nonstop service to Caracas, Venezuela and Port of Spain, Trinidad from its Toronto hub. Service will alternate, with service every other day to the alternate destination beginning April 6th. It will be operated with Airbus 319 aircraft.
  • Eos Airlines celebrated its second anniversary last week and announced it will begin flights between JFK and Paris, and Newark and London Stansted in 2008. It plans to secure two additional aircraft to introduce four new routes next year. Eos flies an all-business class fleet.
  • American Airlines will fly from Chicago-O’Hare to Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport beginning June 2, 2008. Service will be operated six days a week using Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
  • Delta announced service from Atlanta to Quaretaro, Mexico beginning January 14th.
  • Horizon Air will be making some service enhancements this year, including some seasonal service.
    • Beginning December 15th, it will offer one daily Q400 flight from Sun Valley, ID to/from both Los Angeles and Oakland through April 5th. Sun Valley is served year-round from Seattle. One daily Q400 flight through April 5th to/from Seattle to Kamloops, British Columbia to accomodate travel to the Sun Peaks ski resort. And four daily flights to/from Seattle to Kelowna, British Columbia on Q400s replacing Q200 flights until April 6th to accomodate travel to the Big White and Silver Star ski resorts.
    • Starting January 6th, a fourth daily Q200 flight to/from Seattle to Walla Walla.
    • Febuary 17th, two daily Q400 flights and three daily Q200 flights replacing six daily Q200 flights to/from Seattle to Yakima, WA, resulting in a 17% increase in capacity.
    • March 9th, six daily Q400 flights and one Q200 flight from Pasco to/from Seattle replacing three daily Q400 and four daily Q200 flights resulting in a 30% increase in capacity.
    • April 6th, two daily Q400 flights to/from Lewiston to Boise replacing two Q200 flights, resulting in a 100% increase; and three daily Q400 flights from Pullman to/from Seattle replacing four daily Q200 flights, resulting in a 50% increase, and one-stop Q400 same-plane service to Boise.
  • Southwest Airlines is going to cut service at Long Island’s MacArthur Airport…it’s only airport served in the New York City area. It will cut two of its flights to Baltimore, three to Chicago, and one to Las Vegas. More than 90 percent of the airport’s traffic is on Southwest and the airport is seeking additional service.
  • Alaska will be inaugurating service from Seattle to Lihue on Sunday, and between Anchorage and Honolulu on December 9th. Alaska Airlines inaugurated its first service to Hawaii on October 12th, when it began service from Seattle to Honolulu.
  • Delta will be expanding internationally at JFK Airport.
    • New transatlantic service to Tel Aviv, Israel(effective March 10); Edinburgh, Scotland(effective May 1); Dakar, Senegal(effective June 2); Nairobi, Kenya(via Dakar effective June 2); Cairo, Egypt(effective June 4th); Malaga, Spain(effective June 4th); Amman, Jordan(effective June 5th); Lagos, Nigeria(effective June 9th); and Capetown, South Africa(via Dakar effective June 3rd).
    • New Latin America routes to Panama City(effective Dec. 13); Guatemala City(effective Dec. 14); Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago(effective Dec. 20); San Jose, Costa Rica(effective Feb. 15); and Liberia, Costa Rica(effective Feb. 16).
  • British Airways will suspend its flights from Detroit to London in March. The airline will use the plane on more profitable routes.
  • Delta will also be offering nonstop service from LaGuardia to Bermuda once daily beginning April 5th.
  • Delta will be serving Bonaire in the Dutch Carribean islands off the coast of Venezuela(effective February 9th) and St. Kitts(effective February 16th0), in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis(the smallest nation in the Americas) from its Atlanta hub. Service will be on Saturdays only.
  • United will be serving Frankfurt from Los Angeles daily beginning December 16th. United is partnered with Lufthansa, which will provide connections beyond its Frankfurt hub.
